Smith rock climber rescued: A California rock climber was rescued July 25 at Smith Rock State Park after being struck in the head by a rock while climbing near Monkey Face, according to a Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office news release. Shawn Snyder, 48, of Bishop, Calif., and a friend were attempting to establish a new climbing route, when a rope reportedly caught a rock, causing the rock to break loose and fall onto Snyder’s head, officials said. Twelve search and rescue volunteers from the sheriff’s office, along with Redmond Fire workers, conducted a steep angle rescue down a hill south of Monkey Face and transported Snyder down the Mesa Verde Trail in a wheeled litter, officials said. Snyder was ferried across the Crooked River in a raft and placed in a ground ambulance, which took him to St. Charles Redmond with injuries not considered life threatening, officials said.
