Red Cross assists on Eagle Crest fire: The American Red Cross is among the agencies assisting with a July 2 fire in the 800 block of Golden Pheasant Drive in Eagle Crest, according to a news release. The fire impacted three families, including three adults and three children. The Red Cross is providing immediate basic needs like temporary housing, food, clothing and health and mental health services.
Former Redmond mayor challenging Endicott: Redmond attorney and former mayor Ed Fitch is challenging Mayor George Endicott in the November election, according to a filing on the Oregon Secretary of State’s website. Fitch served as Redmond city attorney 1979-96. He was elected mayor in 1998, but he resigned in 2001 because he moved out of the city to Eagle Crest, according to Bulletin archives. The City Council then appointed Alan Unger mayor. According to Fitch’s website, he has been a member of the Redmond Development Commission, Redmond Executive Association and South Highway 97 Advisory Committee. Fitch lists key issues as extending the reroute of Highway 97 to the south, expanding the COCC Redmond Campus and increasing quality housing. Endicott is seeking a sixth two-year term as mayor. In 2016, his most recent election, Endicott got 71 percent of the vote against then-Councilor Anne Graham.
Man arrested after downtown chase: A Redmond man was arrested June 25 after leading police on a chase, according to a Redmond Police news release. Police were called to Satterlee Jewelry, 513 NW Fir Ave., after employees discovered a man in a restricted area of the store, police said. The man then left the store with another man and a woman. Officers found the group near the intersection of W. Antler Avenue and NW Fifth Street, police said. One of the men left the scene on a bicycle, but police were able to catch him in an alley behind Kobald Brewing with the help of three downtown business employees, police said. The other two people also ran, but were later contacted by police, as well, police said. One man, Brett Yahtin, 28, of Redmond, was found with items allegedly stolen from the jewelry store and was arrested, police said. Yahtin faces charges including second-degree burglary, criminal mischief and theft; interfering with a peace officer; resisting arrest; and methamphetamine possession, police said. A business owner also told police he saw suspects try to hide items, including two necklaces and other jewelry, in landscaping nearby, police said.
Redmond students graduate from Oregon Tech: Three Redmond students graduated during Oregon Institute of Technology’s June 16 commencement in Klamath Falls, according to a news release. Haley Colberg earned a degree in dental hygiene, Kirsten Murren graduated in diagnostic medical sonography and Roxanne Sadony received a degree in echocardiography.
