July 4, 1918 — SEVEN HUNDRED THOUSAND ILLITERATES OF DRAFT AGE. It will surprise most people to learn that in these United States, with her splendid educational facilities, we have found over 700,000 men of draft age who can neither read nor write any language whatsoever. They are simply illiterates, and it is almost beyond explanation and belief. There is a screw loose somewhere in our great educational system and it should be tightened at once.

July 1, 1943 — Edward Radtke At Training School. Edward L. Radtke, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman A. Radtke, 432 Eighth street, Redmond, has been enrolled in a special eight-week course for diesel operators at the naval training school on the campus of Iowa State college, Ames, Iowa. Upon completing the term he will be eligible for promotion to a petty officer rating and be assigned to duty with the fleet or at a shore station.

July 3, 1968 — Smith to recount war experiences. Corporal Joel Smith, who has recently returned from 13 months’ service in Vietnam, will be the speaker after a potluck dinner at the Ray Johnson post, American Legion, and its auxiliary. The dinner will be held at 6:30 Monday, July 8, at the Legion hall, with each person requested to bring his or her own table service. Anyone interested is invited to come and hear Cpl. Smith’s recounting of his experiences at Da Nang and Phu Bue Hue.

July 7, 1993 — Patricks celebrate 50th. Vernon “Pat” and Madeline Patrick will mark their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house 2-6 p.m. Sunday at their home, 817 N.W. Canyon Dr. The event is being hosted by Bob and Terri Barstad, and the Patricks’ children, Mike and Judi Patrick, Kelly and Marilee Patrick, Ryan and Glenna Patrick, and Shawn Patrick. The Patricks were married June 27, 1942 in Twin Falls, Idaho. They moved to Redmond on May 15, 1948, when they purchased Cent-Wise Drug, following Pat’s discharge from the U.S. Navy.
