Redmond Proficiency Academy sophomore Sarah Kilroy won the girls classic race Feb. 24 at the Oregon Interscholastic Ski Racing Association Nordic state championships at Mt. Bachelor with a time of 16 minutes, 1.2 seconds on the 3.5-kilometer course, which was shortened from 4K because of trail conditions.

It was the first time a non-Summit skier won an event at the state championship since 2016.
Kilroy’s performance led RPA to 101 points and a third-place performance in the nine-team meet. According to an RPA news release, the team has only five skiers, compared to more than 30 for some larger programs. The Ridgeview girls finished fifth with 153 points. Summit won with 32 points.
Kilroy also finished fifth in the Feb. 23 5.5K freestyle race.

On the boys side, Ridgeview finished tied for fifth with Hood River Valley in the six-team event, with 126 points. Summit won with 20 points. Ridgeview’s Albert Hesse had a second place finish in the 5.5K freestyle, with a time of 14:30.6 and was fourth in the 3.5K at 15:24.1.
Kilroy will join Hesse as Redmond representatives in the upcoming Junior Nationals in Utah.
