Have you been watching the Winter Olympics? I have — I love the drama of the competition and the personal stories of all the athletes.
It’s just as good as the plot of your favorite book. If you want to extend the Olympic glow, check out one of these books or movies featuring sports from the winter games.
Books
“Beartown” by Fredrik Backman: Winning a junior ice hockey championship would mean everything to the ailing Beartown, but a scandal involving the team’s general manager divides the town’s residents.
“Swift Edge: A Mystery” by Laura DiSilverio: When world-class figure skater Dmitri Fane goes missing, his partner knows just whom to hire. It’s up to Swift Investigations to find the missing Fane, and fast as the Olympics are just weeks away.
“Hold Me” by Susan Mallery: Destiny Mills wants a quiet life after growing up with two country-music stars for parents. When a stint on a search-and-rescue team brings her in contact with a world-class skier, she’s torn between the calm life she’s created and a life of passion.
“Radio Free Vermont: A Fable of Resistance” by Bill McKibben: Gold medal-winning biathlete Trance Harper joins an underground group advocating for Vermont’s succession, lending the movement credence and visibility.
“Crazy Blood” by T Jefferson Parker: The Carson dynasty rules the ski resort town of Mammoth Lakes in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California. Family drama threatens to rip the clan apart in the run up to the Mammoth Cup ski race — a qualifier for the Olympics.
“The Book of Love and Hate” by Lauren Sanders: Jennifer Baron is a failed Olympic speed skater now running her family’s foundation and trying to stay sober, when her billionaire father disappears. She travels to Israel in search of him in this literary thriller.
“A Matter of Trust” by Susan May Warren: Tragedy forced champion snowboarder Gage Watson off the circuit, and he’s made his new life as a ski patroller in Montana. His morals are tested when the woman who cost him his former life needs his help.
Movies
“The Cutting Edge”: A handsome, self-centered ex-ice hockey player and a champion figure skater with a prima donna attitude are mismatched partners in the quest for an Olympic gold medal.
“Cool Runnings”: Based on a true story, this is the comedic saga of four Jamaican athletes going to extremes to compete as bobsled racers at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary.
“Eddie the Eagle”: Inspired by true events, this is the feel-good story about Michael “Eddie” Edwards, an unlikely but courageous British ski-jumper who never stopped believing in himself.
“Miracle”: The inspiring true story behind one of the greatest moments in American sports history: the 1980 United States ice hockey team’s Olympic victory against the Soviet Union.
