Howard Fredrick Snider of Bend passed peacefully on Jan. 24, 2018, at Prairie House Assisted Living and Memory Care, in La Pine, under the care of St. Charles Hospice of Bend.
Howard was born April 14, 1927, in Alpena, MI., to Laura L. and James E. Snider. The family moved out west to Gilchrist, OR., in 1942, where they helped pioneer the Gilchrist Timber – Co – . with the Gilchrist family. After a short career working in the woods, and serving his country in the U.S. Navy, Howard found his way to Bend, and married Marjorie L. Felker on June 30, 1956, in Reno, NV. Howard made a career change into the glazing (glass) industry, apprenticing at Cascade Glass, later to start up his own glass business, Alpine Glass Company, in 1965. After retiring in 1980, Howard and Marge moved south of Sunriver and built their dream log home on the Little Deschutes River. Howard enjoyed woodworking, hunting, fishing, golfing, traveling, and, most of all, tinkering and riding his tractor.
Howard was a member of the Bend Elks Lodge No 1371, the Bend Masonic Lodge, VFW La Pine, Quail Run Golf Club, and the Grizzly Mountain Long Rifles.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Lorene Rousseau of Alpena, MI., Shirley Ray of Livermore, CA., Neva Wiseman of Redding, CA.; three brothers, James Snider of Portland, OR., Lee Snider of Truckee, CA., Lester Snider of Bend, OR; and his wife, Marjorie Snider of Bend, OR; and one son, Rick Snider of Cottonwood, CA. Howard is survived by one brother, Bill Snider of Bend, OR; one son, Bruce (Donelle) Snider of Redmond, OR; four grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. There will be no service at Howard’s request.
We wish to thank all of our family, friends, the faculty at Prairie House Assisted Living and Memory Care of La Pine, St. Charles Hospice of Bend, and Baird Funeral Home of La Pine.
