Girls soccer sweep

Redmond and Ridgeview’s boys and girls soccer teams didn’t just get players on the recently announced all-league soccer teams; they took home several superlatives.

Redmond teams swept the girls awards, with Ridgeview senior Aspen Jeter being named Intermounain Conference player of the year and Redmond’s Martha Segura taking home coach of the year. Ridgeview senior goalkeeper Alex Nadermann shared boys player of the year honors with Bend junior Calvan Berteau.

Jeter led Ridgeview to its first appearance in the Class 5A state playoffs. The Ravens had a 13-3 record, as well as a place in the state quarterfinals and No. 6 state ranking.

While the 4-7-2 record second-year Panthers coach Segura led Redmond to might not jump off the page, the improvement they showed does. The Panthers outscored opponents 13-0 in their first two games, which already gave them more than the six goals they had in all of 2016.

They also picked up their first league point in years with a 1-1 draw with Mountain View on Oct. 17. With a young team and nonconference victories over Pendleton and Crook County, which are expected to join the IMC in 2018, league victories can’t be far behind.

Segura credited her players with helping her earn the award, which she won over coaches from three state quarterfinalists, including state champion Summit.

“This award means a lot to me,” she said. “It was such a great feeling to be recognized amongst such amazing coaches in our conference. I also know that the reason why we improved so much this season was because my girls were all very coachable and worked together as a team. I am excited to move forward with my returners and incoming freshman in the new conference next fall. We wish the seniors the best, and will miss them a lot.”

Nadermann, who has committed to play college soccer for Northwest Nazarene University in Idaho, wrapped up his high school career by leading Ridgeview to its second consecutive state play-in appearance and a 5-8-1 record. As a junior, he helped the Ravens to the playoffs for the first time.

“I honestly was surprised, but very, very humbled,” Nadermann said. “I just never thought it could happen. It’s rare for a goalkeeper to get the recognition, but it’s very humbling.”

Along with Jeter, other Ridgeview first-team girls were senior Sierra Cassaro and juniors Jordyn Buresh and Madison Stadler.

Junior Mackenzie Stadler and sophomore Averi Hartford made second-team all-league for Ridgeview, while Redmond saw second-team honors for juniors Scout DeMain and Jordan Fox and freshman Rory Eldridge.

Ridgeview seniors Ciara Pinkerton and Saylor Goodwin were named honorable mention along with Redmond senior Sarah DeChristopher and junior Lexi Martin.

Nadermann’s fellow Ridgeview senior Nick Nelson and juniors Isaac Grusy and Christian Kim were named to the boys first-team, along with Redmond sophomore Owen Byrnes.

Senior Luke Reynolds and juniors Cade O’Neill and Jonathan Orozco were named to the second team for Ridgeview, as were Redmond juniors Hunter Holmes, Fernando Colin and Oscar Gonzalez.

Making honorable mention were Ridgeview junior Nathan Webb and sophomore Jose Robles and Redmond sophomores Eric Cardona and Jonathan Najera.
