August 16, 1917 — A corn crop surpassing any ever known before; a reduction in wheat prospects due to damage to the spring wheat crop and record crops of barely, rye, white ans sweet potatoes, tobacco, and hay were forecast today in the August 1 crop report of the Department of Agriculture. Corn production was placed at 3,191,000,000 bushels, an increase of 67,000,000 bushels over the July forecast, and 68,000,000 bushels above the record crop of 1912. The showing is due to vast improvement in the growing corn in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa and Missouri. In Kansas the condition declined to 33 percent of normal, compared with 66 percent on July 1, and as a result Kansas’ crops is forecast at 81,740,000 bushels, compared with 169,536,000 bushels forecast in July.

August 17, 1967 — Smoke-jumpers, retardant air tankers, the inter-regional suppression crew, the regional warehouse and all forest service personnel connected with Redmond Air Center were involved in the busiest four days they ever encountered, starting Aug. 10. Most of the rash fires were started by a dry lighting storm which began at the California border in the Winema National Forest, moving North to the Willamette and Deschutes and then east to the Ochoco. Six jumpers were dispatched Tuesday evening to two fires on the Willamette. One thousand gallons of retardant were dropped on one fire and 12,000 on another, the Anderson fire, which now has a line around it. Possible lightning was forecast Wednesday in the Fremont, Malhuer and Ochoco forest, the air center advised. At one time 104 jumpers were operating from the center, reinforcements being flown here from Missoula, Mont., McCall, Idaho, Redding, Calif., and Cave Junction. At one time four DC-3’s were dropping jumpers simultaneously, the busiest spot being the Willamette forest.

August 12, 1992 — The City of Redmond, like Deschutes County, is growing tired of seeing repeat drunken drivers and persons driving suspended getting behind the wheel of a car. So the city Tuesday enacted a vehicle forfeiture ordinance that allows police to seize vehicles of repeat offenders. The law, which is the same as one approved by Deschutes County, went into effect in Redmond at midnight. Councilors stressed that the law is intended to curb the problem with repeat offenders. The law is intended to reach those people “who don’t respond to ordinary measures,” Mayor Bob Riggs said. “We noticed in the court reports that some people are very determined repeat offenders — one person had a half-dozen driving while suspended charges in a single court report. Some people seem determined to repeat.”
