An Idaho golfer came away with first place in a prestigious Redmond tournament.
Russell Grove, a men’s and women’s golf coach at North Idaho College in Coeur d’Alene, shot a 12-under par 203 over three days to win the June 13-15 Oregon Open Invitational. It was a final tuneup for this week’s PGA Professional Championship in Sunriver, where the top 20 finishers qualify for the PGA Championship, one of four PGA Tour majors.
Grove’s score was six shots better than second-place Derek Berg of Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish, Washington.
Jared Lambert, a 2011 Redmond High School graduate, was the top Central Oregon finisher, shooting three even-par rounds of 72 to finish at 218. The Eagle Crest pro closed the final round with a birdie on No. 18 to put him in a tie for seventh place with Jeff Coston of Semiahmoo Golf and Country Club in Blaine, Washington.
The 192-player Oregon Open has been won in the past by notables including Tommy Armour, Horton Smith and Peter Jacobsen.
