June 21, 1917 — It is up to America either to feed the allies or to fight the great war alone. It is up to America to demand passage of the Lever Food Control Bill if the Teuton hosts are to be kept from American Shores. These were the two outstanding features of Herbert Hoover’s warning to senators when he appeared before them to explain the food control bill. Under a fire of cross-examination Hoover cleared away much misunderstanding about the bill. Altman, vice president for community and industrial relations. This information came Monday in a letter from Seattle to J.R. Roberts, secretary-treasurer of Redmond Airport Commission. Altman stated that West Coast has received endorsements from Redmond Chamber of Commerce and Redmond Education Association, as well as from the airport commission. “While the details of this proposed schedule stress the Portland – San Francisco service that will be available to Bend/Redmond, it should also be realized that this schedule will enable connecting schedules to many other points not now readily accessible to Redmond,” Altman stated in his letter.

June 10, 1992 — SISTERS — Numerous Sisters-area residents know firsthand the devastation wildfire can cause. A catastrophic fire three miles northeast of Sisters caused $5,000,000 in property damage, destroyed five homes, consumed 935 acres of public and private lands and forced the evacuation of numerous families Monday and Tuesday. The Sage Flat Fire, which began shortly after 2 p.m. Monday, was 40 percent contained by Tuesday afternoon, with fire lines encircling about 85 percent of the area, according to Mike Skeels, fire information officer at the multi-agency coordination center in Bend, which also organized attacks on the Haner Butte Fire south of LaPine Monday. Depending on weather and prevailing winds, Skeels estimated containment of the Sage Flat fire could come Thursday night.
