Cross-country teams battle at Intermountain Conference

Ridgeview’s Albert Hesse earned one of the individual spots in Saturday’s Class 5A state cross-country championship meet by placing fourth in the Oct. 29 district meet.

Hesse’s time of 15 minutes, 54.9 seconds trailed only three runners from defending state champion Summit in finishing fourth on the 5,000-meter course at Juniper Golf Course, 13 seconds behind victorious Thomas Schoderbek.

Overall, the Ridgeview boys finished in fourth place with 111 points while Redmond was fifth with 123 points. Summit led the way with 19 points.

No Redmond or Ridgeview runners qualified for the girls competition at the state championship at Lane Community College in Eugene. The Panthers finished in fourth place with 89 points while Ridgeview was fifth in the five-team meet at 120 points. Summit also won the girls event with 19 points.

Hesse will return to state, where he finished 18th in 2015. He also finished seventh in the 3,000 meters at the state track meet in May and 19th in his event at the Oregon Interscholastic Ski Racing Association meet as a sophomore.

Other boys finishers for Ridgeview were 20th-place Kian Bangerter, 18:00.9; 25th-place Nathan Turpen, 18:21.7; 30th-place Jared Durham, 19:26.1; 32nd-place Zach Jacoby, 19:55.4; 33rd-place Anthony Kuper, 20:08.1 and 34th-place Kyzer Pearcy, 21:46.9.

For Redmond, 22nd-place Connor Agnew, at 18:09.9, was the top boys finisher, followed by 23rd-place Aaron Park, 18:11.1; 24th-place Treyson Conley, 18:11.9; 26th-place Benny Saito, 18:22.3; 28th-place Tyler Bemrose, 19:00.4; 29th-place Justin Kettle, 19:15.5 and 31st-place Aris Kitchin, 19:45.7.

On the girls side, Ridgeview’s Averi Hartford, who finished ninth, had the best local time at 20:04.1. Other Ravens finishers were 22nd-place Jessica Whitticar, 21:31.4; 28th-place Emily Edwards, 22:41.7; 30th-place Lindsey Whitney, 22:58.7; 31st-place Jane Whitticar, 23:06.0; 34th-place Willow Cook, 23:48.5 and 35th-place Elena Capson, 24:55.4.

Redmond girls finishers were 13th-place Dana Wanamaker, 20:32.4; 16th-place Whitney Gieschen, 21:10.2; 17th-place Kim Roberts, 21:14.6; 18th-place Andrea Broyles, 21:15.1; 25th-place Anna Land, 22:06.9; 26th-place Hailey Gieschen, 22:14.6 and 32nd-place McKaylie Capps, 23:08.6.
