Ridgeview starts season with a win

Ridgeview got its league season off to a winning start Sept. 16, while Redmond came up short against the state’s top-ranked team.
Ridgeview
Clayton Brown’s 28-yard overtime touchdown catch from Blaine Gibbs gave the Ravens a 12-6 victory against Hood River Valley in the Class 5A Special District 1 opener for both teams. He made the catch on fourth-and-13 after Hood River missed a field goal on its first overtime possession. It was the second touchdown of the game for Brown, who scored on a 20-yard run on the first drive of the game for Ridgeview (1-0 league, 1-2 overall).
Hood River tied the game in the fourth quarter, but a blocked extra point forced overtime.
Redmond
No. 1 Bend, meanwhile, scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns to break open a tie game and claim a 42-28 victory against Redmond. Panthers quarterback Bunker Parrish scored his second running touchdown of the game to tie the score going into the fourth quarter. He also added a 30-yard touchdown pass to Colton Mortenson, which gave Redmond (0-1, 0-3) the lead after a quarter.
Parrish finished 8-of-15 passing for 139 yards, along with 121 rushing yards. Cooger Smith ran for 139 yards and a touchdown, while Mortenson had 94 receiving yards.
What to watch for
Both Redmond teams will play at home at 7 p.m. Friday. The Panthers face Mountain View, which fell to 2-1 with a 35-21 loss in its league opener at Hermiston. Ridgeview plays host to Pendleton, which is 1-2 on the season after a 55-17 loss at Summit.
