Library has cures for summer boredom

Some of us find ourselves with a summer so jam packed, we can’t add another thing to the list. Others end up on the couch, totally bored with nothing to do.
If you find yourself in the latter camp, come visit us at the library. We can keep you busy and entertained all summer long. Check out bit.ly/2a2Y07g to further explore all the resources listed below.
Is it too hot to go outside? Come enjoy the library’s cool atmosphere while you read amazing books, surf the internet without data charges, or use our microscope, board games, and early learning space. We’re also a Poke Stop if you play Pokemon Go!
Would you like to tackle a project around your house or yard? We have many do-it-yourself resources. Try one of these out for advice, know-how, and instructions on home projects:
• “100 Things Every Homeowner Should Know”: How to save money, solve problems, and improve your home
This book will help you make informed decisions, problem solve and know when to call in outside help.
• “The Homeowners Energy Handbook”: Your guide to getting off the grid by Paul Scheckel
Step-by-step instructions for small and large projects that will help reduce your electrical bill.
• Kill-A-Watt Meter: Did you know you can check out an object that will tell you the energy use of your appliances? Another way to be in the know about your energy use and where there are possible savings.
• “Homegrown Berries”: Successfully grow your own strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries and more. Summer berries fresh from the vine or bush are one of life’s great pleasures. Start planning now and you can have a crop for next summer!
• Language learning: Are you interested in learning or practicing a language? In addition to a large collection of language learning books, audio CDs and DVDs, the library also has classes and groups for language acquisition:
Join us for the Spanish/English Conversation Group starting from noon-1 p.m. Aug. 9. Bring lunch and converse with neighbors of all ability levels.
Explore Pronunciator (in Deschutes Public Library’s DIY collection) for online courses that cover languages from Portuguese to Swahili.
• Do you want to take a class? Check out the library’s event guide for a full listing. Here are some examples:
• Learn how to write insults like William Shakespeare in our Barbs by the Bard class at 2 p.m. Aug. 20.
• Learn how to grow your business with online marketing with social media with SCORE from 6-7:30 p.m. Sept. 8.
• Take a free online class on hundreds of topics through the library’s Gale Courses. These range from creative writing to accounting.
Plus: Want to view beautiful art here in Redmond? Did you know that the library hosts art displays? We currently have a selection of quilts, photography, a selection of native stones from the Central Oregon Rock Collectors, and, of course, a rock chuck.
There is so much going on at Redmond library. Stop by this summer to beat the heat, have fun and keep your brain engaged.
