It’s been years since Redmond had a district champion in Little League Softball.
This year, it has three.
The 11-12, 10-11 and 9-10-year-old all-star teams each won their divisions at the District 5 tournament last week in Prineville. They will each represent Redmond Little League in their state tournaments.
The 11-12-year-olds, or majors, team won’t have to go far. Redmond will play host to the state tournament in that age group, the first time in several years. The event starts Saturday.
“It’s definitely nice to be able to send a team into the tournament when you’re hosting,” said majors team coach Paul Walker, who is also Redmond Little League’s vice president of softball.
The tournaments for the other two age groups start July 23 in Baker City.
Redmond just missed going four-for-four with district champions. The 13-14-year-old age group finished second in the district.
While they are being taught well, Walker largely credits the players with the improvement Redmond is showing in softball.
“They’re just some good groups of girls,” he said. “They’re working hard. They’re playing hard.”
