- Geoff Folsom / SpokesmanRedmond senior Alani Troutman jumps during the high jump May 12 at the Intermountain Conference track meet.
Redmond and Ridgeview high schools will be well represented this weekend in Track Town.
The Panthers traveling to Eugene include seniors Jacoby McNamara, Alani Troutman, Donnie Pate and Jordan Soto and sophomore Colton Mortenson, who all won events at the May 12-13 Intermountain Conference meet. Ridgeview had victories by junior Brent Yeakey in the shot put and discus.
Redmond athletes feel good about how they will do at Friday and Saturday’s Class 5A state meet — despite their third-place finish at the conference meet. They point out their ninth-place finish in Eugene last year, which beat Bend. Redmond lost to the Lava Bears at the IMC meet because Bend had more athletes competing.
“You get to state and it’s more about quality,” Troutman said.
Third-place Redmond finished with 108 points at the district meet this year, while fourth-place Ridgeview had 76 points. Summit won the boys event with 175 points.
Ridgeview was fourth on the girls side with 48 points, with Redmond finishing last in the five-team district with seven points. Summit again won, with 258 points.
Redmond swept the boys 4×100- and 4×400-meter relays, with Pate, Mortenson and McNamara coming away first in both. They were joined by Troutman in the 100 relay and Soto in the 400.
McNamara’s time of 10.79 seconds beat second-place Pate in the 100-meter dash. McNamara also won the 200 with a time of 21.29 seconds — the best time in the state this year.
Troutman’s high jump of 6 feet, 2 inches beat out teammate Jacob Curry. Troutman also won the long jump with a leap of 22 feet, 5½ inches.
McNamara will defend his 2015 state title in the 200 at Hayward Field, while Troutman seeks to win consecutive state long jump crowns.
McNamara feels confident about his chances in the 200 at state and has set a goal of 20.95 seconds, which would be a state high school record. He has been running a half-second better than the state meet record.
“I know what it takes to get the state meet record, but I want the overall state record,” he said.
Troutman wants to top 23 feet in the long jump and 6 feet, 6 inches in the high jump.
The meet will be special for Redmond senior Gabe Brauchler, who qualified with a third-place finish in discus at districts. This will be his first trip to state in four years. He looks forward to competing at the historic stadium — which will play host to the U.S. Olympic Trials in July.
“I’ve been there for football camp, but I’ve never competed there,” he said. “It’s a dream.”
On the other end, freshman Curry will represent the Panthers after finishing second to Troutman in the high jump. Curry said he taught himself to jump but now learns from his elder teammate.
“I’ve been really looking at Alani,” Curry said. “He’s a real idol for me.”
Yeakey, who finished second in discus and fourth in shot put at state last year, led one-two finishes over Ridgeview senior Chris Steffey in both events at the district meet. Yeakey had winning throws of 57 feet, 53/4 inches in shot put and 170 feet, 6 inches in discus.
Ridgeview seniors Jonathan Irby, who finished third in the 400, and Seth Whitley, fifth in the 100, also qualified for state.
Ridgeview’s top finisher in girls competition was junior Brenna Pinkerton, who was second in shot put.
The Redmond girls’ best individual performances were sixth-place finishes from junior Andrea Broyles in the 1,500 meters and senior Brittany Smith in the 100- and 300-meter hurdles.
