Socks are essential for most daily uniforms. They come in all colors and varieties, but a local startup owned by Matthew Gilman looks to make each pair worn an expression of the wearer.
“I’m trying to make these socks a representation. When you wake up and put on the socks, it’s a reminder to be the best person you can be and do things in a way that represents who you are,” Gilman said.
Chivaz Wear, which began in Gilman’s garage in 2012, focuses on colorful, knee-high socks that don’t fall down throughout the day. Gilman creates each sock design, sometimes collaborating with friends. The socks are available in three sizes in more than eight designs; Central Oregon-themed socks are on the way.
Gilman moved to Central Oregon with his wife and son in September 2015 from the Bay Area. Gilman worked in the technology industry, scoring a job with video game company Electronic Arts before realizing that a desk job wasn’t for him.
“I’m still trying to figure out what makes me work, but it feels right to be in Central Oregon,” Gilman said.
Gilman plans to enter into the real estate business to pay the bills but will remain primarily focused on Chivaz Wear. His small startup isn’t making him any money yet, but he hopes to build a customer base of like-minded “independent personalities.”
“I haven’t made a penny on this, but I love it,” Gilman said. “After so many hours, I finally feel like I have a brand and product that makes sense to me.”
Chivaz Wear got its name from a goat Gilman said stood on a surfboard that was stuck in a tree near his home in California. Gilman saw a personality in Chiva, the goat’s name (and Spanish for goat) that resembled his own.
He said Chiva represents being yourself no matter what and following your passions. The Chivaz Wear slogan puts it simply: “Stop Sheepin’ & Get Goatin’,” or don’t be just another part of the herd.
Gilman is aware that wearing a sock won’t give you special abilities, but he said that every time you put on one of his socks, he wants it to be a reminder of what Chivaz Wear stands for. And with bright colors and bold designs, wearing the socks is sure to turn some heads.
Each pair costs $18.99. They’re available online and locally at Herringbone Books and Trinity Bikes. Gilman has sold more than 5,000 pairs so far, including international sales.
He handwrites a thank-you note for each order placed through his website. Gilman said that Chivaz Wear is a way he can offer a product that comes from his heart.
“If you want something that helps the expression of you, if the message of the goat resonates with you, and (you) want a solid, quality sock, then these are for you,” Gilman said.
