Redmond will be represented by 14 wrestlers at the state meet, while some Ridgeview and Redmond swimmers made the finals last weekend at their state championship.

Wrestling

Redmond finished in second place at the Class 5A Special District 4 wrestling championships Feb. 19-20 at Mountain View High School in Bend. The Panthers’ 347 points were 88 behind first-place Hermiston. Ridgeview finished with 31 points for eighth in the nine-team event.

Heavyweight Jacob Brauchler pinned Hermiston’s Beau Blake to win his weight class. Other Redmond highlights included Mario Nonato pinning The Dalles/Durfur’s Joe Linebarger to win the 220-pound weight class and Mitchell Willett (160 pounds) pinning Hermiston’s Joey Gutierrez in the final.

Willett is the top seed in his weight class at the state meet, which starts Friday at Memorial Coliseum in Portland. Brauchler and Nonato will be the second seed in their weight classes, while Matt McCain (138 pounds) is seeded sixth, Dayton Woodward (145 pounds) is seeded seventh and Austin Doescher (120 pounds) is seeded eighth.

Other area wrestlers at state include Redmond’s Bunker Parrish (220 pounds), Austin Hill (195 pounds), Humberto Ruiz (170 pounds), Hunter Smith (160 pounds), Bailey Fisher (132 pounds), Wyatt Gross (126 pounds), Jake McEathron (120 pounds), Trae Bolken (106 pounds) and Ridgeview’s Julio Osorio (145 pounds).

Swimming

All five of the Redmond and Ridgeview swimmers who qualified for the OSAA Class 5A Swimming Championships made it through the preliminaries to the finals Feb. 20 in at least one event.

Redmond’s Loryn Trail picked up two fifth-place finishes in the finals of the 100-yard backstroke and butterfly Feb. 20 at the Class 5A girls state meet in Gresham. She was the only Redmond representative at the meet, but her performance allowed the Panthers to finish ninth in the 12-team event. Only a sophomore, Trail will have a chance to improve on the performance next year.

Ridgeview’s top performance came in the 200 freestyle finals, where the team of Tate Lighthall, Ben Hucke, Reed Pozzi and Owen Hucke finished fifth. Ridgeview had two sixth-place finishes, Owen Hucke in the 50-freestyle boys finals and the 400 freestyle relay, made up of the same group that competed in the 200 relay.

The Ravens finished 10th in the 16-team boys competition.
