Ridgeview and Redmond high schools will be represented at the Oregon State Activities Association 5A Swimming State Championships on Friday and Saturday.

Ridgeview senior Owen Hucke will return to the state meet for the third time, qualifying individually in the boys 50- and 100-yard freestyle. He reached state as a freshman and sophomore but narrowly missed a third trip in 2015.

“That kind of puts the icing on the senior cake,” Ridgeview coach Jeff Vallie said.

Hucke finished runner-up in both events at the Feb. 12-13 Intermountain Conference meet. His time of 23.15 seconds in the 50 free made him the ninth seed among 12 state qualifiers, while his 100 free time of 51.43 seconds was 11th of 12 qualifiers.

Also returning to state will be Redmond sophomore Loryn Trail, who finished third at the IMC meet in the 100 backstroke and fourth in the 100 butterfly. Her backstroke time of 1:01.98 was fifth among 12 state qualifiers, while her butterfly time of 1:02.21 was seventh of 12 qualifiers.

Ridgeview will also be represented in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays. Hucke, his brother, sophomore Ben Hucke, and juniors Tate Lighthall and Reed Pozzi will swim in both events.

Freshman Rogan Prescott and senior Richard Villagrana will serve as alternates for Ridgeview in the 200 relay, where the Ravens’ time of 1:35.59 is fifth among 12 qualifiers. Prescott, Villagrana and freshman Jay Wymer are alternates in the 400 freestyle relay, where Ridgeview’s time of 3:31.21 is sixth of 12 qualifiers.

The 400 relay team knocked four seconds off its season-best time, while the 200 team cut two seconds off its best time, Vallie said. He added they will have a chance to reach Saturday’s finals if they continue to improve.

“I knew they could go fast,” he said. “I didn’t know they could go that fast.”

The state preliminaries are scheduled for 1:45 p.m. Friday at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham.

Overall, Ridgeview finished fourth and Redmond fifth in the five-team conference in both boys and girls. Bend won the boys competition and Summit took the girls title.
